Career Development

Career Education is an integral part of a student’s development and therefore they are involved in a range of programs to support their career choices.

Years 7-9

Students in Years 7 and 8 are given support in career development and their subject choices by the Program Leader – Middle School.

In Year 9, the Program Leader – Middle School remains responsible for the students; however, students are exposed to career information to support their transition into the Senior School. Over 8 lessons, students explore the concept of work, culture and occupations, reflect on their personal qualities using career resources, investigate the link between subject choices and careers, and develop resumes and cover letters.

Years 10-12

In Years 10 – 12, the Program Leader – Career Pathways takes responsibility for the career development program.

During Year 10, students undertake a Career Education program where they identify personal strengths; research courses, careers and pathways of study; discuss employability skills; and develop interview skills. Embedded in this program is the development of a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. Each student participates in a meeting where the SET Plan and senior subject choices are finalised through discussion between the student, her parents and a College leader.

In Year 11, students can attend lunchtime and outside school hours career events, as well as undertaking updates to their SET Plan during GRIT lessons. Students are surveyed about their post-school interests, and relevant alumni are invited back to speak to students about their careers in these interest areas.

Like Year 11 students, Year 12 students are invited to attend lunchtime and outside school hours career events, as well as receiving targeted guidance regarding their post school options. Students participate in group sessions regarding options for post-schooling, ATAR, and applying for tertiary entrance through QTAC. During Terms 2 and 3, students will attend individual post-schooling meetings to discuss their thoughts and decisions for life beyond school.

Work experience is an optional opportunity for students in the Senior School based on existing programs on offer in the community. Students wishing to undertake these programs speak with the Program Leader – Career Pathways.

All students at Mt St Michael’s College aspire to excellence, and work towards achieving their tertiary studies goals through both ATAR and Non-ATAR pathways, including the completion of AQF Certificates for some students.
